Another runner quilted............. from Exuberant Color

It was a lazy day yesterday but I got the second table runner in these fabrics quilted.  This photo is too light, still struggling with cellphone photos for my blog.

I did ditch quilting following a fabric, turning corners every 1.5".  This photo is a little darker than the fabrics really look.

I also finished the binding on the first one and took the photo with both finished table runners since I didn't show a whole view of the Kaffe fabric one yet.

I spent over an hour trying to come up with fabrics for the back of ...

It's really sewn now.................. from Exuberant Color

This looks a lot like the photo from yesterday but it's really sewn together now.  It is 46" x 64" as predicted.  All of the Kaffe collective fabrics came from the bin marked 'large Kaffe scraps' except 2 prints that I cut from 6" strips.  One print, used in 2 colorways, is from 2010.  There are a couple other oldies in there too.

The largest part of the day yesterday was spent cutting the battings and making backings.  I didn't take any photos as I was working.  I had 6 batting pieces I wanted to cut and I ...

Only one photo................. from Exuberant Color

There were lots of tasks yesterday but I only took one photo.  All of the blocks for the Plaid-ish Quilt are sewn and on the design wall but this isn't the final layout.  I need to move some of the medium value blocks so the same fabrics aren't near each other.

In addtion to sewing the last 9 blocks I sewed the binding on the other table runner that I quilted last Sunday.  Then I cleaned off the table where I cut my batting and made a list of all of the pieces of batting that I need ...

Finished table runner and prep work............ from Exuberant Color

I finished the hand sewn binding last night on the red Kaffe fabric table runner.  It is 15" x 31.5".  Now it is time to sew the binding on the other table runner.

I have decided to go with the smaller size Plaid-ish quilt so I got all of the remaining blocks prepped yesterday morning.  There are 2 finished blocks here with the 5 remaining to be sewn.

I had prepped the four dark blocks the night before.  I have enough light blocks already sewn.

I had to take my van out for a ride yesterday to keep the ...

A sewing day.......... from Exuberant Color

I started the day yesterday choosing bindings for the 2 table runners.  I like this stripe with both the front and back of the red Kaffe runner.

This diagonal brush stroke fabric in rust is good for the second table runner.  I cut enough for 2 because I have another similar one ready to quilt.

While in the basement I found 16 blocks I made many years ago and sewed them together into a table topper.

Jack Frost was busy on a cold day that started at -2 and got up to 9 degrees.  It was 0 by bedtime and ...

A quilt top!............... from Exuberant Color

The flannel quilt top is finished!  It has been hard to get a good photo of this quilt.  It is a little more rust toned than it looks here.  The contrast between the light and dark is also softer.  If you go back to this post you can see the original quilt I planned this layout for.

I took some close up shots to better show the colors and patterns in the fabrics.

The colors in this photo are truer than the photo of the whole quilt top.

This photo is also truer color but the contrast if off.  The ...

Cut, sew, cut............. from Exuberant Color

I needed to get the Plaid-ish pieces off the design wall so I sewed 3 of the 4 blocks, then sewed 3 more dark blocks.  After that I cut more pieces so I can  make more medium color blocks.  I only had about a third of the medium color pieces cut after an hour.

Last night I pressed all of the sewn blocks for the flannel quilt and did a trial layout.  I can see that about half of the rectangles that are already cut are too dark for this quilt so I'll cut some more light and medium ...

Plaid-ish mock-up............. from Exuberant Color

I cut enough pieces to make a mock-up of all three blocks that are in the Plaid-ish quilt.  The medium value blocks are in both vertical and horizontal positions.  Red/pink/orange is my medium color for my version of the quilt and I needed to be sure there was enough contrast between the dark and medium fabrics.  I think it is going to work so now I have a lot more cutting to do.

I only got 2 blocks sewn of the flannel triangles.  I baked one batch of cookies and mixed the dough for another batch that needed ...

Several things......... from Exuberant Color

First in the morning yesterday I made a couple new labels for boxes of pieces and parts. These are all strips, triangles and scraps.  They are on the highest shelves because I will be looking in them the least.  This is the top 3 shelves of a 7 shelf bookcase.

I put the pieces for one of the 20 dark blocks in Plaid-ish up on the design wall.  I have more than half of the pieces cut for those 20 blocks.

Last night's full moon is called the Wolf Moon.  I took this photo before dark, not knowing if ...

Past quilt from parts department............ from Exuberant Color

To expand on my "parts department" post yesterday, this is a quilt I made in 2016.  I had a lot of batik 2" finished triangles that I had previously cut from scraps.  I made the star blocks as my mindless evening sewing for a few months.  Then the blocks got placed on a shelf.  One day I came across them and on the next shelf were leftover red 16 patch blocks from another quilt.  As I moved them and placed one pile on top of the other, I saw that the both sets of blocks were the same size and ...

Another day of triangles......... from Exuberant Color

Yesterday morning I paired lights with dark for more flannel triangle squares.

I got 51 of them sewn last night.  Now my totals are 54 + 58 + 51.  I still have a bunch to sew from the morning pairing.

This is the assortment cut so far of dark squares for the Plaid-ish quilt.  I have 60 of 80 cut, 20 to go.  I'Il probably overcut since I'm not sure the ones with red in them will work because all of the mediums are red/pink/orange.  I also have most of one of the other shapes cut.

This is ...

Sorting by value........... from Exuberant Color

As I was dividing the Kaffe scraps into dark, medium and light for the Plaid-ish quilt I decided the mediums will all be pinks, reds, or oranges. Because so many of Kaffe's fabrics are multicolor, a lot of them got eliminated from the selections. I didn't get all the way to the bottom of the bin.  I will look at the sizes I need to cut and decide how many of these I really need.

As I work on the Plaid-ish quilt I'll decide if any need to be removed, or if I need  more.

I might ...

#2 finish for November 2024 from Exuberant Color

"Memories - 1956" is finished, just a couple months after I made the quilt top.  The gray dotted fabric is a Kaffe Fassett fabric, "Spot", the pinks are Kaffe's and Tula Pink's fabrics.  It is 64.5" x 76.5".

The backing fabric is by Kaffe Fassett also.  The batting is Hobbs 80/20 and it was quilted by my longarm friend, Robin.

I think the stripe with flowers worked really well for binding.  It is also a Kaffe fabric.  I just realized I didn't rotate this photo.

I hadn't checked the tomato plants for a few ...

2 goals.................. from Exuberant Color

I had 2 goals yesterday: renew my driver's license and finish the binding on the pink/gray quilt.

First the driver's license;  Illinois is the only state in the country that requires adults over 75 to do a driving (road) test every time they renew their license.  I was 78 the first time I had to do the road test, 82 the second time and now I will be 84 in a week for the 3rd time.  So I got a 4 yr. license the first time, over 80 they only give a 2 year license and starting ...

Sunday Only finished........................ from Exuberant Color

I named this quilt "Sunday Only" because it was a project in 2022 that I worked on just on Sunday evenings.  I did do cutting of triangles on other days but all of the sewing was on Sundays.  If you check back to this post and scroll down you can see the antique quilt that was my inspiration.  I was about a third of the way into the quilt when I realized that all of the triangles in the antique one were marching right and I had been making them marching both left and right.  At that point I knew ...

Binding done, next in line..................... from Exuberant Color

The binding was finished a little before 10 last night.  I'm looking forward to seeing it open and checking out the scrappy binding.  Photo shoot today.

Earlier in the day yesterday I trimmed the pink/gray zig zag quilt and cut the binding.  I'll start prepping this one today for the hand finishing of the binding.

There was almost 2" of rain in my gauge from 3 days of storms.  I'll check it one more time this morning.  We really needed the rain and I'm thankful we got that much.

Many different fabrics in binding............. from Exuberant Color

I have about 60" left to hand stitch on this binding.  Six of the different fabrics in the binding are shown here.  There are 3 more fabrics in the last 60".  I hope I can finish this one today and then start on the binding on the pink/gray quilt.

I decided to open up the panel that came with the Charley Harper fat quarter selection I showed a few days ago.  It might end up as part of a backing for a quilt.  It is 36" x 45".

Backing, binding................... from Exuberant Color

I was happy to find I had enough of this print for the back of the butterfly quilt.  It is used as the large wings on 2 of the butterflies.

I trimmed the 'Sunday Only' quilt and found the group of partial width Kaffe strips.  Some are over 30", others as short as 10".

After sorting through them, this the batch I decided to use.  I pieced one long strip and when I sewed the binding onto the quilt, I didn't need the last 3.

I originally planned to sew the binding on this quilt all by machine, but ...

Binding audition................... from Exuberant Color

This Kaffe stripe fabric is the one I had been thinking about using for binding on my pink/gray zig zag quilt.  I looked last night and found 2 small pieces of it.

I think it will work OK and just add to the quirkiness of the quilt which is titled "1956".  The pink/gray combination takes me back to my sophomore year in high school in 1956 (yes, I'm really that old!).  The flowers will be in parts of the binding and other areas might just have the gray/white wide stripe.  This binding will probably be hand ...

Getting ready.............. from Exuberant Color

Cutting batting and making backings has been on my mind for a couple weeks so yesterday morning I finally got to it.  I haven't pressed the backing yet but it is pieced.

Yesterday afternoon was the birthday party for my 1 year old great-grandson.  He didn't want anything to do with the cake that was put in front of him.  He started pushing the plate to the front of the tray on his highchair.  Luckily his mom caught it before it tumbled.  He is walking now, even outside on unlevel ground.
